Wooden Staircase On Board: How to Restore It and Preserve Its Elegance Over Time Wood deterioration in the marine environment

The wooden stairs of a yacht deteriorate quickly. Wood reacts to salt, sun, humidity, and constant foot traffic. The surface loses its protection, becomes dull and uneven, especially in exposed areas such as the bow. In a recent project, we worked on a staircase in these conditions: faded wood, worn finish, and sections more damaged than others. After an initial assessment, it was clear that a complete refitting was needed.
The work began with a deep sanding to remove the damaged layer and bring the wood back to an even base. Even after this step, the staircase already appeared cleaner. Then, four coats of primer were applied to strengthen the surface and prepare it for the final finish, with light sanding between each coat. After some small final touch-ups, a fifth coat of primer was added.
The project was completed with a matte clear varnish, chosen for its natural and elegant look. The result restored full harmony to the stairs: the surface is once again even, stable, and visually pleasing. Beyond aesthetics, the intervention also improved safety by making the steps more reliable and less slippery.

Preserving the result and maintaining the wood over time

After refitting, consistent care is essential. It’s enough to rinse frequently with fresh water and avoid harsh detergents or abrasive sponges. An annual inspection helps address small imperfections right away. The durability of the treatment depends on sun exposure and how the boat is used.
Restoring a wooden staircase requires expertise because marine wood reacts differently, and the boat is always moving. The shape of the stairs demands precision. A well-executed staircase immediately enhances the appearance of the boat and highlights the wood. This type of work shows how good craftsmanship brings back value and protection.
Giving new life to the stairs also means preserving the boat’s history. Every step carries marks of time. With a complete refit, this identity is maintained while giving the wood new strength to last long into the future.
